Sunday May 9, 2010 12noon Pacific I’m always curious about what people say about themselves by their actions or inactions. As a leadership coach, I’m always paying attention to this phenomenon. Recently, I had occasion to meet with a fellow manager who was seeking some of my advice on her personal goals, specifically her financial goals. She had over $20,000 in credit card debt and kidded about how she still must have money because she "hadn’t run out of checks yet". Oi Vey, where do I start? What I saw in that moment was someone who had lost significant control of her life and this was just one way it was showing up. We went on to discuss other areas of her life where she acquiesce her power. She started to see several areas but her health, career, and relationship with her boyfriend were most apparent to her. What themes show up in your life? How do you notice them? How does any one theme relate to other areas of your life? Do you even notice them when they do? We are all on a path. We all get off the path at times, nothing wrong with that. The key is to not check out and ignore the signs that you are straying from being your best self. One of the themes I’ve seen in my own life is around scarcity. I first noticed it in a financial realm which seems pretty obvious. However, it was so helpful to me to see how my scarcity mentality showed up in other areas; the way I interacted with others that had opposing viewpoints, how I made purchases, and believe it or not, even how I behaved in rush hour traffic. Once I figured out I was coming from scarcity, a lot of that stuff just went away and I was released from its grip. There are messages to be noticed for all of us. What we do with them is entirely up to us. Pay attention to what shows up in your life. Look at how it is impacting your life, and decide what you want to do to release its grip on you.
