Inside before Outside

One of the things that drain a business is duplication of effort and other things that reduce the efficiency of time and other resources. None of us think we do this because we are looking at the big things. But if you look at the little things, you probably are and your staff is probably doing it too. One of my management rules is a little thing I call “Inside before Outside”.

This rule has served me my entire career. It means what it sounds like; check your own backyard first. Going outside your own backyard usually involves getting others involved, making the issue more complex and as a result, more costly.
Start looking at how questions and issues get handled on your team. Look for people going outside for information, approval, support, council. These are critical areas where you can step in and create a remedy and stop the leaking of valuable resources that goes unnoticed. Provide your people a way to stay “Inside” and you will have fortified your team and your department in the process.
I’ve been hearing from some of you via email. Keep those great questions coming. Always love to hear what you think and hear your stories.
