Sunday May 30. 2010 - 1pm My management philosophy has always centered around growing people and empowering them to do more, learn more, and be confident about their decision making abilities. We all have had mentors in our personal and professional lives that we think of when we do a certain thing that they helped teach us or understand about ourselves. I am always striving to be that person for my directs. I am always trying to look at them and see what are they naturally good at that I can help them see and develop. Another part of my management philosophy is about the self-fulfilling philosophy. Last week I was working with one of my supervisors who is having a difficult time with one of his directs. He was convinced that the employee “Just doesn’t get it”. I told him to just work with them as if they do get it and see what happens. The results were surprising to the supervisor as he started to tell me that the employee was starting to “change”. My belief is that the employee was always capable; the supervisor’s perception was coloring how he engaged the employee. Self fulfilling philosophy played out both ways, the employee wasn’t getting it, then the supervisor changed his belief then the employee did get it. Funny how our perception of something tends to lead us around. Hope you are able to be that person is your directs lives that they think ofwhen they see how they can fish on their own.
