Why 6 Sigma Fails

It may seem like a simple concept that good management is paramount to having all other things work well in a business or department. This seems painfully obvious and as such, its importance, is very much under rated.

I’m nearly complete with my Green Belt certification and the point that employee input is key to getting

buy in on the changes you are tying to make has been brought up multiple times. Do you believe that without employee buy in any improvement will not be sustainable?

I believe it because I remember what driving change was like before I knew to do this. I used to think that as a manager, all I had to do was ensure people knew the expectation, that they had what they needed to do the job, and that there were clear consequences for nonconformance. Not bad, but not optimal.

As a coach, I started to see how unbelievably subtle resistance to change can range from behavior as minor as a slow down in the implementation plan to a full blown failure to follow the process.

Why would any employee just flat out fail to follow the process? That didn’t make any sense to me until I started coaching. From that perspective I was able to see how our innate sense of resistance can trump logic and reason.

I’ve also learned about the value of spending the time to get employees involved, oriented, and open the any process changes. Once asked to make a choice, people always make the best choices for their situation and resistance is reduced. This is because they are actively choosing to do something. This is the power of coaching and supports the management function so effectively. Some managers know this with training and some just know to do it. I had to be shown but am glad I now know because it makes managing people so much more enjoyable.

Now I can put my energies on the employees and let them drive the change that is needed instead of me forcing it.

Just my thoughts.
